U.S. Veteran Roy Lynn Culver, 86, passed away on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at his home in Sunnyside, WA. Roy was born on August 19, 1924 at Jordan, South Dakota, the son of Ethel (Lufborough) and Edward R. Culver. He moved to Washington on October 1936. He resided in Outlook, Washington and went to the Outlook Grade School and Sunnyside High School. In his Senior Year he was drafted into the United Sates Army. He served in France, Germany and Czechoslovakia with the 16th Armored Infantry Division. He served with General Patton’s 3rd Army. He was Assistant Fire Chief of the Outlook Fire Department for 17 years. He retired in 1980 after working many years on Road Construction. He then worked at Hanford from 1982 until 1987 and retired again in 1987. He was an active member of the VFW Post 3482 in Sunnyside, VFW Post 7952 in Richland and Post 63 in Boise, Idaho. He faithfully served on the Honor Guard for both Sunnyside VFW and the Richland VFW. On October 10th, 1980 Roy married June Hawk at Sunnyside, WA. Roy was a member of the First Christian Church in Sunnyside and the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Richland where he lived before moving to Garden City, Idaho in 2006. Roy is survived by his brother Kenneth, step-children, Lyle and Duane Hawk, Donna Viray, Marlene Hawk and Margaret Martin. He was preceded in death by his wife, June Hawk Culver; mother, Ethel; father, Edward; brothers, Lowell, Jess and Bill; sister, Dorothy and Maxine. Viewing and visitation will be held on Sunday, June 12th from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Monday, June 13th from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at the Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside, WA. Funeral service will be held on Monday, June 13th at 1:00 p.m. at the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church Grandview and Taylor, Sunnyside, WA. Burial will follow at the Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside, WA. In lieu of flowers those wishing to honor Roy’s memory may contribute to the Sunnyside VFW Post 3482 or Richland Post 7952 Honor Guard.
