Irene B. Cervantes

Irene B. Cervantes, 87 passed away peacefully on August 18, 2016 in Toppenish, WA.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Benito Cervantes.  Irene was born in Pflugerville, Texas on July 19, 1929 to Maria and Marcial Borrego, one of 16 children.  As a young lady Irene traveled to Ohio where she served as a nanny for a doctor’s family.   In the early 50’s her and Benito made their home in Mabton, Washington where they raised 7 children.  Irene worked for the Mabton School District as a home visitor .  She is survived by one sister, Consuelo Acevedo and her 7 children, Sylvia Cervantes, Grace Smith (Gene), Benito Cervantes, Jr., Norma Sharpe (Andy), Sergio Cervantes (Connie), Rafael Cervantes, Lucy Campbell (Shawn), including 21 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.  Irene attended Mabton Immaculate Catholic Church and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Sunnyside and was a member of the Guadalupanas Association.  Irene was known for her hospitality and joy of making tamales, something she did until she was 80 when her health prevented her from doing so. 

Viewing and visitation will be held on Sunday, August 21, 2016 from 2:00 PM - 8:00 PM with a Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:00 PM. at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Sunnyside, WA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 22, 2016 at 10:00 AM at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside, WA. with burial to follow at Mabton Cemetery, Mabton, WA. those wishing to sign Irene's online memorial book may do so at www.funeralhomesmith.com Smith Funeral Homes in care of arrangements.
