On Saturday June 2nd at 10 pm, Guy C Roberts entered through Heaven’s Gate into the arms of Jesus.
Guy was born in Prosser, WA to Joe and Rachel (Kincaide) Roberts on Sept. 30th, 1928. He joined 5
brothers: Ron, Glen, John Wesley, Wayne, Boyd and his only sister Mona (Engblom).
At the age of 3, the family moved to a small farm in Sunnyside, WA.
In the 8th grade, he peeked through a school window and got a glimpse of the “new girl” Barbara Andrus
who would later become his wife. They began dating in high school and were married on Aug 29th,
1949.
During Guy’s senior year at Sunnyside High School, he left school to join the Coast Guard with his good
friend Cliff McDonald. They served 1 ½ years before taking early retirement, due to the fact that the US
Department of Treasury ran out of funding for the Coast Guard. Guy returned to Sunnyside and earned
his GED. He went to Washington State University for one semester before returning to Sunnyside to
begin work with the John Deere dealership. He began working for his father-in-law, Leroy “Bus” Andrus
in 1959 at his produce company “Andrus and Funk”. When the Funks retired to Spokane, Guy became a
Bus’s partner and it became “Andrus and Roberts Produce Company”.
Guy started breeding and racing quarter horses in the early 60’s but quickly switched to thoroughbreds.
Guy and Barb’s farm “Guy Bar Farm” bred 3 Washington state Champions and many stakes winners
during its 45 years of breeding and racing. He led the Washington Thoroughbred Breeders rankings for 7
years and stood some of the top stallions in the state of Washington. He served as president of the
WTBA for several years and was also on the Washington State Horse Racing Commission.
Guy was a lifelong member of the Sunnyside First Baptist Church. He served on the church Board of
Trustees. He also served on the Board of Trustees for Linfield College in McMinnville, OR.
Guy and Barb enjoyed attending the Seattle Seahawks games and were original ticket holders.
They also were lifelong supporters of the WSU football team with season tickets. Go Cougs!
Guy and Barb enjoyed watching all their kids and grandkids in their life’s endeavors.
Guy enjoyed many riches here on earth but none greater than his love for his beloved “Shorty” (Barb) and his family.
Guy was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Rachel Roberts, and all of his siblings. His in-laws
Bus and Henrietta Andrus; and by his daughter Pam Schoenberg and his son-in-law Mike Hopper. He is
Survived by his wife Barbara and his children, Diana Hopper, Cindy Hoctor (Charlie), Scott Roberts
