Born John Michael Sparrow in Prosser, Washington to Michael and Martha Sparrow who resided in Grandview. John lived and attended school in Grandview, Washington graduating from Grandview, high School with the class of 1961.
After high school John served 4 years in the Coast Guard.
He married Kathy Prescott in 1967 in Sunnyside, Washington. They had 2 sons, Keith and Kurtis Sparrow. They divorced in 1994.
John worked at Darigold in Sunnyside, and the Grandview Post Office. After retiring from the post office in 2001 he worked security for the Federal Building around Yakima for a short time.
He was a reserve Officer in the Grandview Police Dept. for 25 years. During the time he was with the Grandview Police reserved he assisted with the Haunted House they put on at Halloween to give children a safe place to go and enjoy the evening for many years.
John and his friend, Glenn Wallingford, enjoyed many hours hunting sage rats in the area and going to Montana several times to hunt Prairie Dogs.
John married Dee Hawthorne Cromwell in 1996 and made their home in Grandview, Washington until his death. John is survived by his wife Dee, sister Kathleen Diane Sparrow Johnson, Arlington, VA. Sons Keith (Judi) grandson Braiden of Sunnyside, Washington and Kurtis (Kirsten) of Carbondale, CO.
Step Children- Dennis (DJ) Cromwell (Sara) and children Trey, Timmy, Grace, and Hope in Malo, WA. Tony Cromwell (Christie) and children Abby, Anthony, Allie of Prosser. Dina Hopper-Armstrong (Jamison) and children Tyler Armstrong (in the Army) Alyssa Armstrong, Emma Hopper, Kohlby Hopper, Jacob Armstrong, Scarlett Armstrong of Woodbine, GA.
John died October 28, 2018 after battling kidney cancer. He put up a good fight as we all knew he would
John is preceded in death by his parents and step son-in-law Daniel Hopper.
In lieu of flowers John has asked that donation be made to the Grandview Police Dept. equipment fund. Checks can be made out to Grandview Reserve Officers Association.
Viewing and visitation will be on Friday, November 2, 2018 from 4 to 8 pm at Smith Funeral Home in Grandview, WA. Funeral service with military honors will be on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 10 am at the Nazarene Church in Grandview, WA.
