Richard Shannon Obituary

 

Richard C. Shannon was born in Weiser, ID on May 9, 1931, to Dallas and Dessie Shannon.  In 1936, the family moved to Yakima. In 1938 the family settled in Granger, WA.

 Rick graduated from Marquette High School in Yakima in 1949.  Rick joined the US Navy in 1950.  He was honorably discharged in 1954.  He was proud of his years in the service which included “Operation Castle”, which was the testing of the hydrogen bomb.

After the Navy, Rick settled in San Diego, CA.  On February 15, 1958, he married Toby Tobin of Grandview, WA.  They started their life together in California. In 1963 they moved to Yakima, where he opened Rick Shannon’s Texaco on Yakima Ave.   Together they raised 5 children.  Randall C. Shannon (Kathy), Trina M. Dale (Keith), Rory C. Shannon (Barbara), Ryan C. Shannon, and Lisel Campbell. Rick also had 12 grandchildren, 9 great-grand children and numerous nephews and nieces.

Rick was preceded in death by his wife, Toby.  His parents Dallas and Dessie; brothers William, Lester,  and Roger Shannon; sisters Ilene Bouchey, Maxine Welsh, Freda Stegeman and Leta Tobin.  He is survived by his sisters Neva Robillard and Linda Lyons.

While operating the Texaco station, Rick was known for having pet skunks and for hiring and training many young people.

The family would like to thank his sister Neva for the many hours of piano playing. His niece Sandy Tobin for her tender care over the last several years.  The family would also like to acknowledge the staff at Elmcroft at Chesterley for their wonderful care over the last 3 years.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Yakima on November 15, 2019 at 10:00 a.m.. Inurnment will follow at Mabton Cemetery on Friday, November 15, 2019 at 12:30 p.m.
