Antonio V. Castillo Sr.

Antonio Villarreal Castillo, best known as “Tony”, age 73, longtime Outlook resident passed away on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loving family and friends.  Tony was born on July 5, 1945 in McAllen, TX the son of Cruz and Andrea (Villarreal) Castillo.  Tony only completed 7 years of elementary school, in Texas, but was a self taught, well educated man through daily and life experiences. He was proud to share his knowledge and abilities with others. Tony married the love of his life, Rosalba Castruita on October 14, 1966 in Ely, Nevada.  They lived in McAllen, TX, Glensferry, ID, and Sunnyside, WA before purchasing their home in Outlook in 1973, where they raised their three children: Chanqui, Cuchi, and Pico. 

Tony’s working career began as a migrant worker where he traveled to Illinois, Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. He then worked as a beekeeper and greens mower with his brother, Andres, at a golf course in McAllen TX. In 1968, he and Rosalba moved to Sunnyside where he worked as an irrigator at Broadview Farm alongside his father, Cruz,  and his brother, Francisco then at Santa Roza Winery. In the winter of 1969, he started as a seasonal worker at Mojonnier’s & Sons but then was hired as full time employee stacking fruit boxes, before long he was promoted to yard foreman.  He left Mojonnier’s & Sons after twenty-four years to start his employment for Johnson Food & Cold Storage as a shipping and receiving foreman retiring in 2011 after twenty-four years.

Tony was a man of many talents including, wood carving, fly tying, drawing, painting, beadwork, restoring fire arms, leatherwork, breeding and raising roosters.   He enjoyed fishing, camping, pheasant hunting, hiking, target practice, dancing, road trips, yard work, reading old west history books, watching westerns, and collecting useful things.  Tony also took the time to listen and record all his favorite Conjunto music. 

Tony is survived by his loving wife of fifty-two years Rosalba Castillo of Outlook, WA.  Children San Juanita Benitez (Jesus) of Yakima, WA, Cruz F. Castillo (Sixta) of Outlook, WA, Antonio “Tony” Castillo Jr. of Sunnyside, WA and Carolyn Hazzard of Sunnyside, WA.  He is also survived by eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren,  siblings, Yolanda Lopez of McAllen, TX, Francisco “Frank” J. Castillo (Rebecca) of Prosser, WA, Alicia “Licha” C. Gomez  of Roy, UT, Andres “Andy” V. Castillo of Reedly, CA, Ricardo “Riche” Castillo of Outlook, WA and  numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Cruz and Andrea Castillo, siblings, Eusebio Castillo and Lucia “Coica” C. Martinez, mother-in-law, Gilberta Dominguez de Castruita and brother-in-law- Joel Gomez.

 His legacy and memory will live on through us by what we learned from him and will share with others.

Viewing and visitation will be held on Monday, May 6, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:00 p.m. at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel, Sunnyside, WA.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Sunnyside, WA.  Burial will follow at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens, Sunnyside, WA.
