Armando Martinez, 78, passed away on March 18th, 2024 in Richland, Washington.
Son of Domingo and Enedina Martinez (nee Esquivel), he was born on May 13th, 1945 in Carrizo Springs, Texas. He graduated from Carrizo Springs High School in 1963. While still living in Texas, he worked in the fields, driving truck and eventually was able to own his own service station. Circa 1965, he relocated to the Yakima Valley.
On February 1, 1970, he began working as a police officer at the Grandview Police Department, kickstarting a 46-year career in law enforcement. During his career with the Grandview Police Department, he earned an Associate's degree in Criminal Justice. He also headed many programs during his time, including the GREAT program and the DARE program. He was a certified CPR instructor and lead countless trainings for his fellow officers as well as members of the community. He was able to train and assist the FBI several times throughout his career on multiple cases within the Yakima Valley.
He retired from the Grandview Police Department as the Assistant Chief of Police on January 31, 2006. On February 1, 2006 he began working for the Sunnyside Police Department as a Security Officer designated to Sunnyside Hospital. He retired from his position with Sunnyside in October 2016. During retirement, he enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and spending time with his family.
He is predeceased by his parents, Domingo and Enedina Martinez, sisters Minerva Reyes (nee Martinez), Paulita Ibarra (nee Martinez), and granddaughter Christina Martinez.
He is survived by wife, Apryl, brother Domingo, children, Anita, Armando, Domingo, Kassandra and Abby. Grandchildren, Cynthia, Stephanie, Roman and Christopher. Great-grandchildren, Chloe, Andrew, Dennis and Eren.
Viewing and visitation will be held on Monday, March 25, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 6:00 p.m. at the Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside, WA. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside, WA.
