Diana Cortez Obituary

Diana Margot Moron Cortez July 23, 1947 – February 4, 2026

Yakima, WA – Diana Margot Moron Cortez passed away peacefully on February 4th, 2026, in the comfort of her home, accompanied by her beloved cats, just as she had always hoped.

Born on July 23rd, 1947, at the Yakima Chief Ranch in Mabton, Washington, Diana was one of ten siblings raised in a household that deeply valued service to God, family, and community. As a young mother of three, Diana's determination led her to Central Washington College (now Central Washington University), where she earned her B.A. in Early Childhood Education in 1978. She immediately dedicated herself to the Yakima School District, beginning a distinguished 35-year teaching career, the majority of which was spent at Franklin Middle School.

Beyond the classroom, Diana was a woman of vibrant interests. She spent several years performing Mexican folkloric dances with Los Bailadores del Sol, celebrating her rich heritage through movement. Her zest for life was perhaps most evident in her travels. Diana explored the world extensively, from domestic landmarks to international destinations including Mexico, Spain, Greece, and Tangiers.

However, her favorite journeys were those centered around her passion for the Seattle Mariners. Whether attending Spring Training or visiting historic cathedrals of the sport like Wrigley Field and Fenway Park, Diana was a devoted fan. She took special pride in traveling to Cooperstown to witness the Hall of Fame inductions of her favorite players, Edgar Martinez in 2019 and Ichiro Suzuki in 2025.

Diana was preceded in death by her parents, Francisco and Manuela, and her sisters, Carmen and Gloria Cortez.

She is survived by her three children: Cruz Leyva (and wife Christy, son Coby), Melissa Strigen (Peter), and Victor Leyva. She also leaves behind her siblings: Rudy Cortez, Celia Sears, Joe Cortez (Flora), Mary Sloan, Francisco Cortez (Laurel), Ricardo Cortez (Marlene), and Alfredo Moron (Dora), along with a large, loving extended family of nieces and nephews, and her faithful feline companions, Ponchito and Cholita.

A Catholic Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament in Grandview, WA, on Tuesday, February 10th at 11:00 AM. A private family burial will follow in Mabton, WA.
