Ernesto "Ernie" Guerra Obituary

Ernesto (Ernie) Guerra 57, of Granger, Washington passed away on February 28, 2024, surrounded by his loving family at Memorial Hospital in Yakima, WA after battling a rare form of Stage IV Lung Cancer. A beloved husband, devoted father, papa, brother, uncle, cousin, and a cherished friend to many, Ernie’s life was defined by kindness, compassion, humor, and love.  His presence brought joy, laughter, and generosity to all who knew him thus leaving an enormous void in all of our hearts.

Ernie was born April 10, 1966 in Toppenish, WA to Monserrato and Paula (Alvarez) Guerra.  He was the youngest of 5 children.

On January 11, 1986, he married the love of his life Laurie A. (Faircloth) Guerra.  They were happily married for 38 years. Together they raised 4 children, Christopher, Ernie Jr., Jennifer, and Matthew.  Over the past 6 years, they took on the responsibility of raising one of their grandchildren, Ernie III.

Over the years Ernie worked many occupations to provide for his family.  He worked for the Yakima Bait Company in Granger, WA building fishing lures.  He works as a driver for a transportation company that transported clients to medical appointments throughout Washington and Oregon.  His most recent occupation was a shuttle driver for Legends Casino in Toppenish, WA for the last 5+ years.  He loved serving in occupations in which he had the opportunity to improve someone’s day either by sharing a kind word, having a listening ear, or providing them with a service that was needed.

Ernie was a caring person and was always looking for ways to serve his community.   He served as a volunteer fire fighter for the City of Granger and Yakima County District 5.  He held the office of Captain for the City of Granger Fire Department.  Ernie’s love for firefighting was instilled to him as a child helping his father get ready for calls.  Ernie also shared his love for volunteering as a firefighter to his own family. His wife, two sons: Ernie Jr, Matthew and his daughter Jennifer, served in the community alongside him.  He was a fire fighter from 2002-2014 until an injury from work forced him to retire from the fire department.  From 2003-2011, Ernie was elected to serve the Granger community as a member of the city council.  He enjoyed being an advocate and leader in his community.

Ernie had many hobbies that he loved to share with his family.  He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, and coin collecting.  He delighted in the outdoors, being around the water, in the mountains, and out on a lake boating.  He looked forward to taking annual trips with his family fishing and camping throughout Washington State.  Ernie would take every opportunity to instill life lessons with his children.  He taught them survival techniques, how to hunt, fish, build shelter.  He also spent time teaching them the importance of gun safety and being able to provide food for your family via hunting and fishing.  He often would share stories his grandkids on past camping or hunting trips he had with their parents.  This brought him great joy seeing the smiles on their faces.

Ernie made so many cherished memories over the years with his family.  Watching his kids get married, the births of his grandchildren, taking trips to Seattle, Las Vegas, Disneyland, California Adventure, Disney World, many different casinos, Water Parks, and numerous beaches.

Ernie is survived by his wife Laurie Guerra, of Granger; Sons, Christopher (Jessica) Fernandez of Granger, WA, Ernie Guerra Jr. of Granger, WA and Matthew (Amber) Guerra of Yakima, WA, daughter Jennifer Martin of Bonney Lake; Brother Felix (Nora) Guerra, Sister Lyndia Espinoza, and Grandchildren Kamiakin, Treigh, Tori, Nathan, Ceneet, Halle, Andre, Kenya, Koi, Arianna, Makayla, Elijah, Sierra, Aubree, Ernie III, Naomi (Vivi), and Heavenleigh; great-grandchildren Brazen, Kylan, Bexley, Kalilah as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.  He is preceded in death by his parents Monserrato and Paula Guerra, son-in-law Frank Martin Jr., two brothers, a sister, a great grandson Kashton McCoy and 2 unborn grandchildren.

A special heartfelt “Thank You” to the 2nd floor nurses, NACs, and all the doctors that attended to Ernie’s Care.
