Frederick "Fred" Schutt Obituary

On December 15, 2024, our loving Husband, Father, Grandpa, Great Grandpa, Brother, Uncle, Cousin and Friend left his home on earth, peacefully and surrounded by family at home, to be in his Heavenly Father’s loving arms.

Frederick Albert Schutt was born to Clarence and Emily Schutt on June 6, 1939.  He was the first born of three children.  Raised in Sunnyside, Fred graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1957.  In 1960, Hazel’s brother introduced her to Fred and his 57’ Chev and they went on their first date.  After a year and a half dating, Fred married the love of his life, Hazel Van Belle, on a very hot July 20, 1961.  Shortly thereafter, Fred’s father-in-law, Archie Van Belle, helped him gravitate to farming growing sugar beets, wheat, peppermint, spearmint and raising about 40 head of cattle.  In 1970, they moved into the home where Fred was raised.  Together Fred and Hazel created their dream - a home, a family and Schutt Farms.  As time went on, Fred farmed silage corn, asparagus, concord grapes and mint.  Fred never officially retired—saying he did not know what he would do if he was not farming.  Making this possible were his two sons, Duane and Randy, who followed in his farming footsteps; his devout employee of 32 years, Manuel Casas; and part-time employee, Candido Casas.

Fred supported his children in FFA, 4H and sports; he also refereed basketball for several years.  He was a member at Sunnyside Presbyterian Church and served as a deacon.  Over the span of 63 years they raised 5 children, remodeled twice and built a pool for all to enjoy.  Fred and Hazel loved traveling together and with their family. The most remembered trip was when they took the entire family to Maui to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.  Maui became their “happy place” and they traveled there several more times.

Fred is survived by his wife of 63 years, Hazel Schutt; his 5 children, Joan (Larry) Den Boer, Duane (Molly) Schutt, Randy (DeEtte) Schutt, Rae Ann (Erik) Jonson and Jessica (Bob) Duda; 11 grandchildren, Lance (Dena) Den Boer, Chad (Erika) Den Boer, Andrew (Lindsey) Schutt, Andrea (Christian) Cloeter, Chase (Amanda) Hurst, Cameron (Star) Schutt, Randi Schutt, Kenedee Peters, Nathan Jonson, Abigail Jonson and Erika Jonson; 15 greatgrandchildren; Gentry, Hayden, Harper, Finley, Hunter, Olivia, Vivian, Evelyn, Tatum, Reese, Crew, Riggins, Griffin, Oaklee and Baby Schutt; his sister, Phyllis (Larry) Wheeler and brother, Bernie (DiAnn) Schutt; sisters-in-law, Carla Dixon; Berti (Tim) Stewart and Trudi (Dana) Barg.  He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews and several lifetime friends.

Fred is preceded in death by his parents and Hazel’s parents; grandson, J.J. Stoker; great grandson, Trey Den Boer; brothers-in-law Richard Dixon, Clifford Van Belle, Leroy Van Belle, Dale Van Belle; and sisters-in-law Esther Van Belle, Viki Van Belle and Debby Van Belle.
