Guadalupe Gutierrez Obituary

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Guadalupe Gutierrez, affectionately known as Lupe who passed away March 24th 2025 in Sunnyside WA, at the age of 84.

Lupe was born to Macedonio and Benita Urrutia February 9th, 1941 in Edinburg Texas.  In 1941, her parents decided to move from Texas to Washington state.

Lupe graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1959.  She continued her education and attended San Diego Community College and then went on to San Diego State.  Wanting to return to Washington state and continue her education, Lupe enrolled at Central Washington University.  There she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education, and in doing so began the start of her teaching career.  She taught Kindergarten at Harriet Thompson Elementary and at McClure Elementary in Grandview.  Lupe wanted to continue to further her education, so she enrolled at Heritage College and earned her Master’s degree.  Lupe went on to teach Kindergarten for 30yrs and retired in 2001.  Lupe was asked one day why she only taught Kindergarten when she was qualified to teach in other areas. Her response was, I love the innocence, kindness and honesty of the children. And with a big smile she said even though the “honesty” part could be sometimes harsh.

Lupe was a very active parishioner at the Blessed Sacrament Church in Grandview.  She was a dedicated member of the Guadalupe Guild, active in prayer ministry, and faithfully served the parish in many ways.

Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her, she will be deeply missed by many.

Lupe is survived by her daughter Rosa (Rocky), her beloved grandson’s Jaden and Jaxon Bales; her siblings Magdalena Cruz, Eva (John) Garcia, Mac (Judy) Urrutia, Wenceslao (Cuc) Urrutia as well as numerous nephews, nieces and great nephews and nieces.  She is preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Antonio, John, & Art Urrutia and sisters Alice Maltos & Thresa Garcia
