Mary E. Gomez, 65, a long time Sunnyside resident, passed away in Sunnyside on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024 at Sunnyside Astria Hospital.
Mary was born on February 9, 1959, in Falfurrias, Texas, the daughter of Eduardo and Estella (Peña) Rodriguez.
She was a Sunnyside resident for most of her life and a 1977 graduate of Sunnyside High School. She married on July 14th, 1979 to the love of her life Alfredo (Fred) Gomez. In her early years she was a bank teller for local banks in the community and later was a secretary for St. Joseph Parrish and Daily Sun News.
Mary loved spending time talking with family and friends. She loved going to the casino, doing crossword puzzles, completing jigsaw puzzles, and reading books; but most of all she enjoyed watching all her grandchildren play sports. She loved meeting and talking to everyone she crossed paths with. She was a child of God who enjoyed sharing his word, providing hope and faith with everyone she met, especially with her Davita family, while completing her dialysis treatments.
Mary is survived by her husband Fred Gomez, her three children Cyndi (Rick) Maldonado, Ande Gomez and Marissa (Vicente) Mendoza. Her brothers John Rodriguez, Ross Rodriguez and Wally Rodriguez; 11 grandchildren Emilee, Ashlee, Brent, Baylee, Treigh, Kailee, Makaila, Jaylinn, Ivan, Olie, Adalynn, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister Lisa Rodriguez and parents Estella and Eduardo Rodriguez.
Viewing and visitation will be held Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024, from 4 to 8 p.m., with a Rosary to be recited at 6 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Nov. 1, 2024, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside, with burial to follow at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside.
