Mary Irene Villanueva, lovingly known as "Irene," passed away on March 8, 2025, in Richland, Washington, at the age of 67. She was born on July 25, 1957, in Woodburn, Oregon.
Irene dedicated her life to serving others through her work and her unwavering devotion to family. She worked as a court interpreter for Yakima County, ensuring that language was never a barrier to justice. Earlier in life, she served as a prison guard in Oregon State, demonstrating strength and resilience in all she pursued. Mary also had a time at Toppenish Middle/High school as a Paraprofessional. Mary's passion for education shone through as she dedicated herself to guiding students on their academic journey. She found joy in helping them navigate challenges and discover their potential.
Her greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her significant other, Douglas LeRoy Mitchell; her daughter, Ilene Marie Uerling; and her cherished grandchildren, Evangeline Marie Murphy, Isaiah Ivan Uerling-Mata, and Miguel Angel Cruz III. Irene also leaves behind her brothers Jesse Mapelli, David Villanueva, and Rick Villanueva; her sisters Cecelia Castro, Layla Bowman, Rosemarie Alexander, Angela Trevino, and Amalia Sanchez; as well as many nieces and nephews, aunts, several brother and sisters-in-law, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Maria Elena Villanueva; her children Douglas LeRoy Uerling II, Faith Uerling, and Paige Lee Uerling; her sister Matilda Villanueva; uncles Robert Trevino and Carlos Trevino; aunt Lillian Trevino; niece Shannon Miller; nephew Donald Miller; and brother-in-laws Juan Castro Sr. and Robert Sanchez.
Irene had a deep Catholic faith that guided her throughout life. She believed that "children are a gift from God" and embraced this belief wholeheartedly. Though she had one living child, she was a mother figure too many throughout her lifetime. Her love knew no bounds—she devoted herself to nurturing those around her with kindness and wisdom.
Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. She was a light in this world whose presence will be deeply missed.
May Irene’s legacy of love and devotion bring comfort to those who mourn her passing.
