Roberto Suarez Garza July 20, 1948 – February 20, 2026
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Roberto Suarez Garza, 77, of Sunnyside, Washington, on February 20, 2026, surrounded by his family in the comfort of his home. He was born on July 20, 1948, in Los Angeles, Nuevo León, Mexico, and was a proud resident of Sunnyside for over 50 years.
Roberto was a devoted husband to Eva, his loving wife of 53 years, and a dedicated father to Luz, Roberto Jr., Josue, and Ivan. His family was the center of his life and the source of his greatest pride. He generously shared the wisdom gained from his own experiences, offering guidance and encouragement to his family throughout the years.
He worked most of his life as a migrant farmworker and spent more than 35 seasons at Independent Foods and Johnson Fruit and Cold Storage in Sunnyside. Throughout his working years, he was known for his strong work ethic and his firm commitment to fairness. He advocated for just treatment and fair wages, earning a reputation as a principled and courageous voice for others. He was not afraid to stand up for what he believed was right, even when doing so came at personal cost.
A lifelong lover of baseball, Roberto began playing at a young age in his hometown and became an accomplished pitcher. Over the years, he organized local men’s teams and found great joy in sharing the field with his sons. The game remained one of his greatest passions and a lasting source of connection. He especially enjoyed cheering on the Seattle Mariners with his family.
Roberto was known for his vibrant personality and unmistakable charm. He was often the life of the party, quick with a joke, a playful imitation of someone, or family stories that could captivate a room for hours. His energy and confidence drew people in, and his presence left a lasting impression.
Music was another defining part of his life. As a young man, he played música Norteña and contributed to shaping the regional sound of his hometown, later receiving recognition for his contributions. His love for music remained throughout his life and reflected the joy and pride he carried in his roots. He thrived as a local radio personality at the Spanish-language KDNA station for several years. With natural charisma and eloquence, he frequently served as a host and speaker at community events and gatherings. He was often invited to offer words at important moments, bringing comfort, dignity, and sincerity to those occasions.
Roberto was also known for his willingness to help others. He was a skilled woodworker and true jack of all trades, never hesitating to lend a hand. No project was too small or too daunting. Whether repairing a home, offering advice, or simply showing up, he did so with generosity.
Deeply devoted to his hometown in Mexico, Roberto helped lead efforts to preserve and strengthen the small community his ancestors helped establish. He felt a strong responsibility to support its growth while honoring its traditions, often championing projects that encouraged progress. Every winter, he and his wife returned to their home in Los Angeles, where he renewed his connection to the community and customs that were the foundation of his life. In earlier years, they would travel to Mexico with their children enabling them to build unforgettable bonds and memories with relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesus (1990) and Rita (Suarez) Garza (2005); his siblings, Vicenta Garza (1982), Alfonso Garza (2002), Matilde Salazar (2007), Eudelio Garza Sr. (2025); and his granddaughter, Jasmine Pilar Garza (2000); and numerous other beloved relatives.
Roberto is survived by the love of his life, Eva; his children, Luz, Roberto Jr (Jenny)., Josue (Michelle), and Ivan (Heather); his grandchildren, Chastitee (Nathan Davila), Nate, Andrew, Aubrey, Prince, Raiden, and Zoey; his great-grandchildren, Milo and Easton Davila; and many extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory.
He will be remembered for his strength, humor, generosity, and unwavering love for his family. His legacy lives on in the stories, music, laughter, and courage he leaves behind.
