Sherman Otto Schafer

1932 - 2025

Sherman Otto Schafer was born February 4, 1932 to Alvin and Cora (Cosner) Schafer in Nyssa, Oregon. His spirit returned to God on May 16,2025 at 93 years of age.

Sherman grew up in Oregon and Washington. He served  2 years in the U.S. Army, married his Sunnyside High School sweetheart, Wanda Perry and grew his family with a son and daughter. Sherman worked hard farming ground and raising beef cattle in Outlook, Washington.  He attended Sunnyside El Bethel Church and later with his family, Outlook Church of the Brethren and Sunnyside Grace Brethren Church.  He enjoyed coaching his son Roy’s Little League Baseball team and also leading, with his wife, the Outlook Grow’em and Show’em 4-H Club. With farming success he was able to grow his farm, build a new house as well as take his wife on international trips.

Additionally in retirement, Sherman volunteered refurbishing the Outlook Cemetery, helping in local Sunnyside schools and delivering Meals on Wheels.

He is preceded in death by his parents and 4 siblings, brothers  Gilbert and Ben Schafer, sisters, Iola Jean Schafer and Lorene (Schafer) Hicks.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Wanda (Perry) Schafer and 2 children, one son, Roy Schafer and his wife Debi of Wasco, Oregon, one daughter, Karen (Schafer) Ables and her husband Scott Ables of Portland Oregon. 

He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Jennifer (Schafer) Thomas, Joseph Schafer, Vance Schafer, Chance Schafer, Ariel (Ables) Westfall, Emily Ables and Micah Ables. As well as 14 great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at the Grace Brethren Church, Sunnyside, WA with burial to follow at the Outlook Cemetery, Outlook, WA. In lieu of flowers to honor Sherman’s life and legacy, donations can be made by check to the: Outlook Cemetery Association P.O.
