Dear Mrs. Saras,
Out of 11 siblings, Wilma and I are blessed that we were able to have you and Mr. Saras as teachers in our lives at SHS. You genuine compassion for teaching and loving kindness will never be forgotten. You touched our hearts and never knew there could be such nice people in this world. Wilma was blessed to have Mr. Saras as en English teacher in 9th grade and learned so much and such a fun class and he always smelled so nice...after all we grew up and worked on 5 dairies...the joy of cows! She reports he was a high academic teacher and learned so much!
Mr. Saras and you, Mrs. Saras touched us immensely and he will be missed. Thank you for being the most compassionate Girls PE teacher and sports. You made class so much fun and we had the best teachers ever!
God give you love and peace during this difficult time. Love, the Leyendekkers.

On hearing from Rosalita of John's passing I rummaged through a box of old papers from my Junior High days and came up with a project we all had to prepare in 7th grade, an autobiography. I not only came upon several items I had forgotten but smiled at the numerous editorial comments John inserted. In the years since leaving Washington I have always made it a point to visit with John and Sally, she on one side and John on the other, catching up. RIP my friend. Love to you Sally. Jack

Dear Mrs. Saras,
It seems only fitting that you and John were still Mr. and Mrs. Saras to all of us, such was the esteem that you both held in our hearts. Myself and my 5 siblings were all students of his. He was a teacher before his time, having us read Hamlet and McBeth, A Tale of Two Cities, memorizing a soliloquy, getting up in front of class to read our papers, on and on. These days those classics are mostly taught in high school AP classes if at all. He was tough but fair. He is my most memorable teacher. Our condolences to you and your family.

I will always remember his profound words regarding how reading can enhance one's perspective of the world. My most treasured Mr. Saras quote (while he encouraged me to read Wuthering Heights) is "Tawnya, there's a Heathcliff in every boy and man". Mr. Saras and Miss Brown were favorite teachers in 7th grade. How exciting it was for us to be aware of the courtship that was occurring between these two! Prior to their marriage, Mr. Saras lived near me, and it wasn't unusual for him and Mr. Wade (roommates) to join us in our badminton game if he noticed us playing in our front yard. That's the kind of teacher he was! No wonder his students loved him.
